FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything people ask us about Mali-X, Mali-back and tax season.

About Mali-X

What is Mali-back?

Mali means money. Your Mali-back is the estimated tax you get back, or save, by claiming every deduction and credit you are entitled to. Mali-X tracks it live as you capture receipts.

Is Mali-X part of SARS?

No. Mali-X is an independent app and is not affiliated with SARS. It organises your records and builds a SARS-ready tax pack that you, or your tax practitioner, can use when you file.

Who is Mali-X for?

Individuals claiming medical expenses, donations, retirement contributions and home office; property owners earning rental income; and businesses tracking equipment, marketing and travel. The app keeps a separate profile for each, with its own totals and Mali-back.

When can I download it?

The app is launching soon on the App Store and Google Play. Email support@mali-xtax.com to hear the day it lands.

Using the app

How do I add a receipt?

Snap a photo, upload a PDF, or forward an invoice by email. Mali-X uses AI and OCR to read it in seconds.

Does the AI save things without asking me?

No. You review what the AI pulled out - supplier, date, amount - before anything gets saved.

How does Mali-X know which category an expense belongs to?

Every expense is filed under the right SARS deduction category automatically: medical categories such as doctor, medication, dental and eye care; Section 18A donations and home office; property expenses such as repairs and maintenance; and business costs.

How accurate is the Mali-back estimate?

It is calculated on current tax rates and may vary. Your final refund depends on your full tax return and SARS's assessment.

What if I forget a receipt?

Mali-X nudges you when a receipt is missing, or when a deduction has been left on the table, through items to review, opportunities and a recommended next step.

Privacy and security

Is my data safe?

Your documents are processed and stored under POPIA, South Africa's data protection law. Every receipt is encrypted in transit and at rest.

Can I delete my data?

Yes. You can ask to access, correct or delete the personal information you have given us by emailing support@mali-xtax.com. See the POPIA & Privacy Policy.

Tax season

Non-provisional individuals by 23 October 2026. Provisional taxpayers and trusts by 22 January 2027. See all 2026 tax season dates.

Which tax rates does Mali-X use?

The current SARS tables. For the 2026/2027 year (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027) the brackets run from 18% to 45%, and the primary rebate is R17 820.
